A root canal, or endodontic treatment, may be necessary when the nerve of a tooth becomes infected. This process saves the natural tooth, without the need for extraction, by removing the infected pulp from the tooth. After a root canal, the tooth will need to receive a filling or a crown to get it back to its natural look and purpose.
What Happens at an Appointment
The area surrounding the problem tooth will be numbed with a local anaesthetic. The dentist will extract the infected tooth with a fine instrument. It will then be sealed and may be capped with a crown. The process usually takes one to two appointments.
